      Huron River Fly Fishing

--

Friday, October 2, 2009

A former Physh ed student now at the University of Michigan brought along a couple of friends to learn about fly fishing on the Huron River. We hope to start a club at the University. While I was setting up students were getting ready to play rugby in the park and a couple of them came by to tell me they had been fishing up north . Seems like a fertile ground for a Trout Unlimited presence.

Mike,
Thank you so much! I had a great time, despite the cold (I will note that it is now sunny...grrrr)
Patti :)

Mike,

Just a note of thanks for such a fun time - I really appreciate your organization's willingness to share their expertise and passion for fishing with us "newbies". A free seminar (lunch included) was very generous. I'm looking forward to becoming skilled at fly fishing - I had no idea I had a talent for tying knots!! Your class definitely gave me the jump start I was looking for.

Please keep me on your mailing list for future events.
Best regards,
Trish W

Mike,
Thanks for these photos. I want you to know how much I appreciate AAATU making a class for women possible. I learned alot from you and with the assistance of the many fishing women volunteers we had great personal attention.

The weather was not so cooperative but we are all stalwart women and made the best of it. I am sooooo happy I learned how to tie on my own flies, no fish caught, only the back of my fleece and disappointed that I lost three flies, even with experts checking my tie ons.I guess those are my mistakes of the season so I can move on and enjoy the fishing next time.

Let me know of any events with AAATU fishing so I can join in. I loved meeting the other women members and their interest to have me fish with them anytime, always fish up with those who have more experience.
I love my hat and the lunch was great.

Suzanne

Hi Mike,
If I didn't thank you for Saturday's flyfishing event, I'll thank you again now. It was fun and I appreciated your generous efforts.
Also, the gals who help were great. Could you thank them for me?

July 18
Michigan Celebration – TU’s 50th Anniversary

The idea for Trout Unlimited was "born" on July 18, 1959 at George Griffith’s cabin on the banks of the Au Sable River when Mr. Griffith assembled fifteen like-minded sportsmen to form our beloved organization. On July 18, 2009, the Michigan Council of Trout Unlimited is holding a party to recognize this historic event. The Michigan Celebration will be held at the DNR Rayburn property on the banks of the Au Sable River, about two miles east of downtown Grayling. There will be food, contests, raffles, displays, games, entertainment, auctions, kid’s activities, fly fishing & fly tying demonstrations, etc. The details are still be worked out, but we expect a really fun, interactive, informative and special event. The event will be free and open to the public. Trout Unlimited members will receive special recognition and other surprises. Volunteers will be needed the day of the event to ensure it runs smoothly and for post party clean up. Mark your calendars today to be part of this very special event. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit the Michigan Celebration website: www.celebratetu.org.

NEWS RELEASE—LOVELLS TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY 3/11/09

TROUT UNLIMITED HISTORY EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS LOVELLS OPENER

The Lovells Township Historical Society has announced that its seventh annual history of trout fishing exhibit will honor the 50th Anniversary of Trout Unlimited. The 2009 feature exhibit, “The Founding of Trout Unlimited, 1959,” will open on April 25 and close on September 30, in the Lovells Museum of Trout Fishing History. The exhibit will focus on the roles George Mason, George Griffith, Arthur Neumann and other board of director members played in the origins of TU. Gary Neumann, Art’s son, will discuss his father’s recollections of his activities in getting the organization started and his own memories of its founding. Brian Burroughs, Robert Andrus and John Walters will also speak on Michigan TU in 2009 from state and local perspectives. Another exhibit on the centennial celebration of the Au Sable River Main Branch Sunrise Club will be housed in the Lone Pine School House Museum, along with an expanded display of early fishing cabins built by the legendary Ed Kellogg. And yet another exhibit there will feature the current projects of the Au Sable North Branch Watershed Restoration Committee. The museums are located on the Lovells Township Grounds at 8405 Twin Bridge Road in Lovells. Regular museum hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museums will also be open every day during the week of August 17-25 for TU members attending its 50th Anniversary celebration in Traverse City.
In addition to the talks by Neumann and Walters in the Lovells Township Hall, Master Fly Tier Dennis Potter will exhibit his wonderful skill behind the vice. Two new presentations this year will be by Cheryl Stephan Lowes on Trout Fishing Art and Richard Perry on Bamboo Fly Rod Building in the Township Hall.
A new outdoor activity this year will be the first ever, first annual “Leaky
Waders 1K Run” from downtown Lovells to the Township Grounds. There will be five race categories and prizes for the winners. The $20 entry fee includes the race, a tee shirt commemorating the occasion and lunch. Join this fun race for the river, as the proceeds will support both the Historical Society and the North Branch River Restoration Committee. Throughout the day there will also be casting with vintage bamboo fly rods on the Township Grounds. Suzanne Gauvreau is a breast cancer survivor who participated in the Reeling and Healing retreat last summer, where she learned to fly fish. An AAATU member was her volunteer fishing guide on this retreat. Suzanne found the outdoor retreat in a beautiful river to be very healing as she enjoyed the camaraderie with the other cancer survivors. She is now getting herself outfitted to continue fly fishing on her own.
Suzanne has a Bachelor's Degree in music (voice) from Michigan State University, and a Master's Degree in music (voice) from the University of Texas. She studied opera for a year in Italy, and has performed across Europe and in the USA including a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. Suzanne has also taught music therapy. Suzanne sings with choir groups, and also on special occasions (such as our banquet here tonight).

April 2 Thursday Annual Banquet at Barton Hills Country Club ( you will be receiving a mailing soon or at Colton Bay)
drawing for the Native Flyfishing Kayak http://aaatubanquet.blogspot.com

April 19 Sunday - pre season fun at the Mericle-Farley Trout Club in Swanton, Ohio (Toledo) An hour drive from Ann Arbor this club features a lake stocked with big educated trout. This is a good warmup for the opener. You can even keep a fish! cost $20 with lunch.
AAATU members,
Each spring for the last several years I have invited the AAATU down to Ohio to get the cobwebs out of your casting arm before the Michigan opener. Here`s a little info. about the lake. Merickle Farley Trout Club was dug as a barrow pit as the turnpike came through Ohio in the mid 50`s. It had a surface area of about 6 acres, and a depth of 8 to 10 ft. Through improvements it is now about 13 acres with a depth of 19 to 20 ft. with two shallow coves with about 8ft. of depth. It`s water supply is a combination of spring, and surface water that is traveling towards lake Erie.

Since it is a still water fishery, the fish, Browns and mostly Rainbows, are constantly on the move , your job is to place your fly so that it will intercept their path and entice them to strike. All fishing is done from shore, you may wear waders if you want to get a few feet closer to the fish.

From October through May we stock a total of about 5,000 fish ,usually a1,000 every other month. You may fish catch and release a total of 9 fish per day or catch and keep with a limit of 3 to take home and eat, or release the first 6 and keep the last 3.

The trip is on Sunday the 19th.of April. Fishing starts any time after 10:00 am. lunch at 1:00 pm . quitting time is up to you. Cost for the days fishing is $ 20 .00 per person, this includes Morning coffee, and a hot lunch. You may bring non T.U. guests with you for the same price per person. I would like to keep the number of fishermen to 15 to 18 so as not to over crowd the fishing experence.

Upon receipt of your check along with the names of those coming I will e mail you back directions to find the lake, flies to bring etc. Registration ends on Sunday April 5th. Checks received after that date will be returned . Don`t delay mail yours today.
